TEAM-BUILDING EVENTS

Many companies organize team-building events, during which coworkers spend time together away from work. Team-building activities were once seen as just a way to keep employees happy, but now most big companies consider them necessary. There are many types of weekend events, such as trying to solve a problem, playing a sport, or doing something creative. But are these events really useful for the people who take part in them?

There are advantages and disadvantages to holding team-building events. Let’s look at the advantages first. Perhaps most importantly, team-building events are fun. Often, work can be serious, and having fun with your coworkers in a more relaxed situation helps you avoid stress when you are back at work. Second, as you are working on a team, the important thing is to work together. There are no rewards for an individual person, so it is important to be helpful and concentrate on making progress as a team. If you have different opinions, you must try to find a good solution. This is an essential skill to develop if you want to be successful at work. Finally, you get to know your coworkers better, so when you go back to work on Monday morning you will understand better the kind of people they are.

Are there any disadvantages to team-building events? Some people say that because each team is trying to win the competition, they only think about winning and don’t learn anything useful for when they return to work. Also, some people don’t like spending their weekends with their coworkers; they prefer to just relax with friends and family.
